MOSKOW - Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, has been sentenced to 30 days after being arrested for administrative violations. Navalny is considered to have repeatedly violated the law on demonstrating.
He was arrested at his home in Moscow on Monday, ahead of an anti-corruption demonstration in Russia. The court in Moscow announced its verdict late on Monday, denying lawyer Alexei Navalny's demands to reject the case, as quoted by the BBC on Tuesday (13/6/2017).
The 41-year-old opposition leader later confirmed this in a tweet on his Twitter page (in Russian). Navalny, who intends to become Russia's president next year, is scheduled to attend unlawful demonstrations in the capital on Monday.
Navalny was previously given permission to hold a demonstration on Sakharova Avenue. However he later changed the location without permission on the night of the demonstration to Tverskaya Street, near the Kremlin.
The protest was filed over a government plan to destroy the Soviet-era apartment block in the city. Permissions were granted for demonstrations at 169 locations across the country, some of which were broadcast live on the Navalny Live YouTube channel.
The protests coincide with a series of official events, including festivals, concerts and military demonstrations, taking place across the country to mark the Day of Russia. Russia Day is a national holiday dedicated to the declaration of sovereignty in 1990.
A similar demonstration led by Navalny in March caused hundreds of arrests.
The protests are the biggest since 2012, attracting thousands of people including teenagers to demonstrate across the country. They are angry with a report published by Navalny accusing Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of corruption.
