Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and Bahrain have severed diplomatic ties and all land and air links with the Gulf Arab state of Qatar. The four countries accused Qatar of destabilizing the region. They also say Qatar supports terrorist groups.
Saudi Arabia's state news agency SPA on Monday (5/6/2017) reported that Riyadh had closed its border, severing land, sea and air links with Qatar.
Citing one official in Saudi Arabia this action was carried out to "protect its national security from the dangers of terrorism and extremism."
Not only, Saudi, Egyptian Foreign Ministry has also closed airspace and port for all transportation Qatar. So it is with the UAE that gives 48 hours for Qatar's diplomats to leave the UAE, as quoted by the BBC.
Abu Dhabi accused Doha of "supporting, funding and spreading terrorism, extremism and sectarian organizations," the state news agency quoted WAM as saying.
The Bahrain news agency reported that they broke ties with Qatar because Doha "shook the security and stability of Bahrain and interfered in its state affairs."
Qatar has long been criticized by its neighbors for its support of Islamists, especially the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamist political group opposed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE for challenging adat rules.
Qatar has repeatedly vehemently denied funding extremist groups. Even so, they remain a major source of funds for the Gaza Strip that is controlled by Hamas and has been the home of Hamas officials who alienated Khaled Mashaal since 2012, according to The Guardian.
As quoted from the BBC, the coalition of Arab countries that are fighting Yemen's rebels in Houthi also expelled Qatar from its alliance because Qatar is seen to support terrorist-strengthening practices. They say Doha supports terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and Daesh (also known as ISIS).
Until the decision of these countries was made, Qatar has not commented.
