NEWS FLASH TODAY IN SRI LANKA!First time, Sri Lanka holds the perpetrators of the spread of religious hatred
Colombo - Sri Lanka police have arrested key figures in one of the Buddhist extremist organizations. The perpetrators were arrested on charges of hate attacks against Muslims criticizing the international community.
Reported by AFP on Sunday (6/11/2017), the perpetrator is a 32-year-old man and comes from radical Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) group. He was the first person to be named a suspect in a case of religious hatred that had triggered tension.
Police spokesman Jayakody said the investigation continued around 16 major incidents since the attack on Muslim houses, business centers and mosques.
"We are firm against the crime," Jayakody said.
However, Sri Lankan police officers continue to be criticized for failing to capture the group's leader, Galagodaatte Gnanasara. According to him, the detained suspect is a close associate of Gnanasara.
Some parties from the militant Buddhist group said his leadership was hiding. Gnanasara denied involvement in the latest attack on the Muslim group, which constitutes 10 percent of the population in Sri Lanka.
The BSS group is accused of inciting inter-religious violence in mid-2014 that left 4 people dead.
Meanwhile, the European Union urged Sri Lanka to take immediate action on the matter. The head of the EU delegation in Colombo, Tung-Lai Margue, said there was no impunity for the perpetrators of hatred.
