KABUL - Amid a revolt that exacerbated economic conditions and restrictions on civil liberties, Afghanistan launched a television channel dedicated exclusively to women. Zan TV, or Women TV, is an all-time digital satellite channel that aims to showcase the achievements of Afghan women as well as the daily challenges they face to a global audience.
Hamid Samar, founder and director of the channel, is optimistic about the channel's prospects.
"Zan TV is the first television channel in Afghan history operated by women and for women," he told Anadolu Agency.
Samar says. Although aid agencies have invested heavily in promoting opportunities for women in Afghanistan, no substantial results have been achieved.
After the fall of the Taliban government in 2002, public relief funds led to the emergence and growth of previously non-existent private media.
Currently, approximately 76 private and public television channels operate but many are dependent on aid and grants to survive in an economy still affected by ongoing fighting and terror attacks.
"We hope that international donors will help and support us to make Zan TV a sustainable project for many years to come, to become a key player in the industry," Samar said.
However, the spirit and staff of the station's women have made it a unique initiative to promote women's issues.
In the presence of a women's symposium entitled "Afghan Women, Peace Envoy" last month, President Ashraf Ghani said that true peace can only be achieved when men and women enjoy human rights.
"Fortunately, we follow a religion in which humans are not divided by sex, but men and women are equal and endowed with equal dignity and status according to human dignity," he told participants.
