Praise be to Allah, Rabb of the Worlds. Shalawat and greetings to our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his best friend.

Here are some of the wisdom behind Ramadan fasting that we sought from some kalam scholars. May be useful.

1. Achieve Degree of Piety

Allah Ta'ala said,

يا أيها الذين آمنوا كتب عليكم الصيام كما كتب على الذين من قبلكم لعلكم تتقون

"O you who believe, are required of you fasting as prescribed for those before you so that you may be cautious." (Surat al-Baqarah: 183). This verse shows that among the blessings of fasting is that a servant can reach the degree of piety and fasting is the cause of this glorious degree. This is because in fasting, one will carry out God's commands and avoid any prohibitions. This is the meaning of piety. The form of piety in fasting can be seen in the following.

First, the fasting person will abandon every that God forbids at that time ie he abandoning eating, drinking, fifth 'with his wife and so on whose heart is very inclined and wants to do it. This is all done in the framework of taqorrub or closer to God and gain the reward from Him. This is the form of piety.

Second, the fasting person is actually able to make the worldly pleasures that exist. But he knows that God is always watching Him. This is also a form of piety that is always felt watched by God.

Third, when fasting, everyone will be passionate about doing deeds of obedience. And obedience is the way to reach piety. [1] This is part of the form of piety in the practice of fasting.

2. The Wisdom Behind Leaving the Shahwat and the Pleasure of the World

In fasting, every Muslim is enjoined to leave lust, food and drink. It's all done because of God. In the hadith qudsi [2], Allah Ta'ala says,

يدع شهوته وطعامه من أجلى

"He has abandoned lust and food because of Me". [3]

Among the wisdom of leaving the lust and the pleasures of the world when fasting is:

First, it can control the soul. Satiety due to plenty to eat and drink, satisfaction when dealing with wives, it will usually make a person forget himself, kufr against favors, and become negligent. So with fasting, the soul will be more controlled.

Second, the heart will be busy thinking about good things and busy remembering God. When a man is too preoccupied with worldly pleasures and lulled by the food he breathes, his heart will become neglectful of the good and neglectful things of remembering God. Therefore, if the heart is not preoccupied with worldly pleasures, it is also not preoccupied with eating and drinking when fasting, the heart will shine, the more gentle, the heart will not harden and will be easier to tafakkur (contemplate) and dhikr to God.

Third, by refraining from worldly pleasures, the affluent will know that he has been given so much more favor than the poor, the poor and the orphans who often feel hunger. In order to appreciate this blessing, even rich people like to share with those who can not afford.

Fourth, fasting will narrow the course of blood. Whereas demons are in the way of human blood. As the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam,

إن الشيطان يجرى من ابن آدم مجرى الدم

"In fact, the devil flows in man in the place where the blood flows." [4] So fasting can calm the devil who often gives anxiety. Fasting can suppress lust and anger. Therefore, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam makes fasting as one of the elixirs for people who have the desire to marry but not yet accomplished. [5]

3. Begin Moving Better

In the month of Ramadan of course every Muslim must stay away from various kinds of sinners for his fast is not in vain, also in order not to get hungry and thirst alone. The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

رب صائم حظه من صيامه الجوع والعطش

"How many people fast but he does not get from his fast except the hunger and thirst." [6]

Fasting becomes useless as this is because the month of Ramadan is still filled with various immoral. Whereas in fasting should everyone try to keep his tongue from rasani other people (read: ghibah), from various vice verses, from the words of lies, vice and vain things.

From Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

من لم يدع قول الزور والعمل به فليس لله حاجة فى أن يدع طعامه وشرابه

"Whoever does not abandon lying sayeth does it, then God does not need from the hunger and thirst he endures." [7]

From Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

ليس الصيام من الأكل والشرب, إنما الصيام من اللغو والرفث, فإن سابك أحد أو جهل عليك فلتقل: إني صائم, نني صائم

"Fasting is not only to keep from eating and drinking. However, fasting is by refraining from the words lagwu and rofats. If there is someone who denounces you or taunts you, say to him, "I am fasting, I am fasting". "[8] Lagwu is a futile and unnatural word. [9] While rofats is a term for every thing men want in women [10] or it can also mean dirty words. [11]

Therefore, when out of the month of Ramadan should every human being be better than the previous month because he had been forged in the madrassa of Ramadan to leave various kinds of immorality. People who used to be lazy to pray 5 times should be aware and routinely do it outside the month of Ramadan. Also in the matter of prayers for the Jama'ah men, can also be dirutinkan done in the mosque as diligently performed during the month of Ramadan. Similarly, in the month of Ramadan many Muslim women who try to wear the veil that closes perfectly, then outside the month of Ramadan should be keep.

Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

وإن أحب العمل إلى الله أدومه وإن قل

"(Know that) the practice most beloved by Allah is a continuous practice (ajeg), although little." [12]

Worship and practice of obedience is not like a flower that blooms at certain times. So, the five times prayer, the prayer jama'ah, night prayer, charity and dressing muslimah, is not so seasonal worship. But it should be outside the month of Ramadan is also maintained. The scholars often say, "The ugly people are the ones who know God (diligently worship, pen) only in Ramadan."

Remember also the message of Ka'ab, "Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan then plucked in his heart that after escaping from Ramadan will do immorality on his Lord, then really fasting is rejected (not worth anything)." [13]

4. The Opportunity to Love Each Other with the Poor and Feel Their Suffering

Fasting will cause someone to love the poor more. Because the fasting person must feel hungry suffering in some of his time. This situation he felt for so long. Finally he was gentle towards others and did good to them. It is for this reason that he receives an abundant reward from the side of God.

Similarly, fasting a person will feel what is felt by the poor, needy, who are full of shortcomings. Fasting people will feel hungry and thirsty as they were feeling. This is what caused his degree to increase in the sight of Allah. [14]

Here are some amazing syar'i wisdom behind the fasting of Ramadan. Therefore, the salaf is longing to meet with the month of Ramadan in order to obtain the wisdom that is in it. Some scholars say, "Salaf used to pray to God for 6 months in order to meet the month of Ramadan. And the remaining 6 months they pray for their deeds to be accepted ". [15]

The Wisdom of False Fasting

As for the usual fasting lessons often discussed among some people that fasting can be healthy for the body (such as can reduce body weight, reduce the risk of stroke, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of diabetes [16]), then it is all wisdom follow-up course [17] and not The ultimate wisdom. So let someone fast his fast to get the wisdom of syar'i first and do not he fast just to expect a healthy favors alone. Because if his intention of fasting is only to attain worldly pleasures and benefits, then the abundant reward in the sight of God will vanish even though he will gain the favor of the world or the wholesome favors he sought.

Allah Ta'ala said,

من كان يريد حرث الآخرة نزد له في حرثه ومن كان يريد حرث الدنيا نؤته منها وما له في الآخرة من نصيب

"Whoever wants profit in the Hereafter will We increase his profits for him and whoso seeketh gain in the world We give him a portion of the profits of the world and not for him any part of the Hereafter." (Surat asy Shuraa: 20)

Ibn 'Abbas said, "People who love to do riya' will be rewarded their kindness in the world. They will not be dizholimi. But remember, whoever performs the practice of fasting, the practice of prayer or the practice of the evening prayer but wishes to wish the world only, the reward of God: "God will give to him the world he sought. However, his deeds will disappear in the hereafter because they only want to benefit the world. In the Hereafter, they too will be among the losers. "[18]

So the righteous, fasting must be done with sincere intention to expect the face of God. While the favors of health, it is just wisdom follow-up from doing the fast, and not the main goal sought. If someone intends to sincerely in his fast, surely the favor of the world will come by itself without him looking for. Always remember the advice of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam,

من كانت الآخرة همه جعل الله غناه فى قلبه وجمع له شمله وأتته الدنيا وهى راغمة ومن كانت الدنيا همه جعل الله فقره بين عينيه وفرق عليه شمله ولم يأته من الدنيا إلا ما قدر له

"Whosoever is his intention is to reach the Hereafter, Allah will give sufficient in his heart, He will unite his scattered desires, the world will he acquire and bow to him. Whoever his intention is to reach the world, then Allah will make him never enough, will divide his desires, the world he has not acquired except that which has been established for him. "[19]

As for the hadith which says,

صوموا تصحوا

"Be quick, you will undoubtedly be healthy." Please note that this hadith is a weak hadith (hadith dho'if) according to the scholars of the hadith scholars. [20]

Hopefully we can draw the precious lesson behind our fast in the month of goodness, the month of Ramadan.
