LONDON - The death toll in a fire disaster that destroyed a 24-floor apartment in London is expected to rise. Because, until now there are still many people missing and firefighters face a dangerous situation when they are looking for victims.
Authorities have confirmed 12 deaths in the incident. However, the figure is forecast to increase and they do not expect to find survivors. Firefighters managed to rescue 65 people from the building.
London Fire Chief Dany Cotton said his crew had reached the top floor of the building. They do an initial visual search of the door but have not done a thorough search because it is not safe.
"We have a structural surveyor and my urban search and search team will come down, make judgments and find a way to keep buildings safe so we can get through the whole building, searching for fingertips, with difficulty, looking, seeing what's there, He said as quoted by Reuters on Thursday (06/15/2017).
Survivors who have lost all their possessions in a blaze overnight in an emergency shelter. A charity and a number of community groups have donated clothing and bedding.
The fire brigade says that the disaster is unprecedented in scale and speed.
"What I am facing is an unparalleled scene with anything I've seen before, the building was on fire, I really never saw it in high-rise buildings," Cotton said.
Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to visit the scene, citing unnamed sources. The May Downing Street office did not comment immediately.
