
Kabul - At least three Afghan policemen were killed when a US military plane launched an air raid on an operation in southern Afghanistan. Two other Afghan policemen were injured in the US air strike.
The misidentified incident occurred on YESTERDAY evening local time, during a raid in Helmand province. This was conveyed by the US military command in Kabul in a statement.
The police, who were members of the Afghan Border Police (ABP), were killed when a US aircraft launched an attack during an operation involving Afghan and American special forces.
"We want to express our deepest grief to the ABP families who were affected by this unfortunate incident," the US military command statement in Kabul told Reuters news agency on Saturday (6/10/2010).
A spokesman for Helmand's governor said three policemen were killed and two others wounded in the incident.
Not yet clear how the chronology of the event. Afghan and American officials said they were investigating the incident.
Taliban militants have further strengthened its position in Helmand, seizing many districts in the province. Not long ago, hundreds of US marines arrived in Helmand as part of a Nato-led coalition mission to train and assist Afghan troops.
Air strikes by American warplanes have risen in recent months in Afghanistan. This comes as US President Donald Trump is considering requests from military commanders for an additional thousand international troops.
